about permaculture

"What permaculturists are doing is the most important activity

that any group is doing on the planet"

David Suzuki  Environmental Scientist

What is Permaculture?  "Permaculture is a design system for creating sustainable human environments"  - Bill Mollison

The word 'Permaculture' is a contraction of 'permanent agriculture' or as it's more widely accepted today 'permanent culture'

The concept was created in the 1970's by Australians Bill Mollison an ecologist and one of his students David Holmgren.  Permaculture is a practical approach using effective design solutions for the problems facing modern society based on a philosophy of  'think global - act local'.

Permaculture can be applied to all types of property whether it's a broad acre farm, a suburban house block or even a rented inner city unit or place of work.  It's all about finding and applying creative holistic solutions to living a more sustainable life by growing organic food, reducing energy consumption, recycling our waste and creating habitat for other life around us.

Today, permaculture has developed from its origins in Australia into an international movement with many thousands of followers, each one applying permaculture principles in their own unique way.- whether it be growing a plot in a community garden or participating in a 'Permablitz Team', to completing a PDC for home or professional use, or educating others or even designing villages in developing countries for international aid agencies - all these people share a common bond and that is to live a better and more sustainable life whilst creating a postitive impact upon the Earth.
